Four Facts about LASIK
LASIK is the abbreviation for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. It is the #1 most sought after elective surgery in the United States.
It is a surgery performed with a laser to reshape your cornea, the transparent, dome-shaped surface that covers your eye.
Reshaping the cornea improves the way light is focused onto your retina, which sends nerve impulses though the optic nerve to your brain. This is how the visual images we see are formed.
By improving how light reaches your retina through LASIK surgery, the visual images you see become sharper and clearer. When the light is incorrectly focused, vision can be blurry due to nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Dr. Lalin Also Performs PRK Eye Surgery
In some cases, Dr. Lalin may recommend an alternative laser procedure to his Hackettstown and Morristown, NJ, patients: photo refractive keratectomy (PRK). This surgery may be better for patients with thin corneal tissue or those with dry eye conditions.
LASIK vs. PRK
Surgical Technique
With LASIK, a re-closable flap is made in the top layer of your cornea before a laser reshapes the tissues beneath. PRK involves the complete removal of a portion of the top corneal layer in order to expose the underlying tissues to the laser.
Recovery
Full recovery from PRK takes about a month, which is longer than LASIK, which only takes a few days. You may feel some mild pain and stinging during the healing process but that is easily managed with eyedrops or prescription medicines.
Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?
If you are dependent on prescription eyewear to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, you could be a good candidate for LASIK or PRK if you meet the following criteria:
- Your prescription has not fluctuated in a year or more.
- You are at least 20 years of age. If you are younger than that, your corneas may still be growing.
- You do not have dry eye syndrome. This condition may become worse after surgery, requiring additional treatments.
- Your corneas are of typical shape and thickness. Extremely thin or oddly shaped corneas may increase the risk of complications. You will receive a precise exam of your corneas at our Hackettstown or Morristown office to determine your eyes are fit for LASIK.
